DURIAN MARKET
For centuries the durian, known as the "King of the Fruits" was a treasured delicacy amongst South East Asian cultures, with little knowledge of the fruit beyond these borders. That changed as tourism and global trade discovered its distinctive aroma and delicious, succulent flesh. The change has been so drastic that today durian has become one of the fastest and most valuable export products in the world.
Singapore is one of the largest consumers of durian fruit in the world right behind Malaysia however China is the worlds most valuable market due to the sheer size of its population. Almost unknown to the Chinese a decade ago, durian has now become China’s most imported and valuable fruit. It has almost single-handedly driven export demand which has grown at an incredible 51% per year in value between 2017-2023.
China's durian imports break records continuously with the latest just last year, with imports increasing nearly 70% in just one year to USD 6.7 billion. The astonishing growth of this market will undoubtedly continue as the its population becomes more familiar with durian fruit.
Malaysia is set to profit substantially from this market as its Musang King durian (also known as Mao Shan Wang) is the world’s most in demand durian fruit variety. With prices sky rocketing over the past five years due to growing demand and limited supply, it has now become one of Malaysia's most profitable sectors. The government has been actively promoting exports to China, Australia and even European markets as it attempts to capitalize on its profitability.
